WELCOME TO DECKLED EDGE PRESS
traditional techniques, modern messages
Both of us believe strongly in fairness and equality and are committed to working towards peace. Much of our work is based around these themes and letterpress printing, with its history of democratising the written word and protest posters, is a perfect companion for expression of our social justice values.
We make mostly small editions, with a love for the written word, poetry and the odd slogan.
We are a small press, with a collection of over 60 typefaces including sans serif, serif, fancy, gothic and wood type. Ranging in size from 10pt to 72pt there is a good mix of new and old, fancy and plain, large and small lead type. The wood type ranges from small and seductive to large and bold, and the collection just keeps on growing…
In pride of place we have our 1890 Lightning Jobber press. A beautiful piece of machinery with great engineering and a hands-on approach, it links us back into history and tradition.
We also own several tabletop Adana 8×5 Platen presses and one 5×3. These are great for small work and are user-friendly.
There are also two tabletop cylinder proofing presses which offer a different method of printing; are easy to use; and let you print longer sheets of paper.
To round off the presses we have an etching press which enables embossing, etching or drypoint to be added to your letterpress work.
Around the studio there is also a good collection of furniture, spaces, quoins, chases, composing sticks, quoin keys and ornaments. Half the fun of letterpress printing is playing with these gorgeous old bits and pieces.
A lot of folk love the look and feel of letterpress work and ask us to help them produce a gift or an edition that is unique. We have done work from poetry prizes to posters to statements, and enjoy creating work with heart and soul.
As a small press we don’t do commercial work or large runs or editions. We do unique, individual pieces, usually in small editions and work together with clients to achieve something special.
